There recently has been a great deal of discussion about Services Science, the application of analytical tools from science, engineering, and mathematics to the study of services. The nature of resources within a services application in industry is very different than that within a manufacturing or supply chain process. Modeling such systems can be very complex, requiring an interdisciplinary approach and often requiring an understanding of the context within which decisions are being made. Topic Maps are an ISO standard for representing knowledge about a system, and they include the ability to represent the context within which the different components of that system interact with one another. This paper examines the utility of applying a semantic tool such as topic maps to the discipline of services science, as a technique for codifying the interactions between the partners in a service relationship.
